Student Accommodation Schemes Reach Completion

Whilst October every year brings summer to a close, it is usually a milestone for us here at Abacus as another suite of student projects hit their eagerly awaited completion dates ready for the new student intake. The summer of 2018 was no exception and we have successfully delivered in excess of 550 new build student bed spaces across four locations in Winchester, Coventry and Leeds. In addition to the new build developments we have completed the ‘rolling’ refurbishment of approximately 1,800 student bedrooms in London, Leeds and Cardiff for our long-standing client; Liberty Living.

Liberty Living’s Senior Project Surveyor Damian Strett commented on our work: “Following completion of Cardiff, Leeds and London, we want to sincerely thank Abacus for their support and commitment in the successful, safe delivery of these projects. These projects are by no means easy.

“The team’s professionalism, expertise and enthusiasm is very much appreciated not only in the important pre-contract stage but especially in the implementation stage which operationally is a time of stress for all concerned on our sites.

Abacus’s support was invaluable in helping Liberty Living getting everything completed in a very timely manner. Please extend this appreciation to the support teams for their contribution in delivering extremely high-quality jobs, which we all should be proud of”.

Our new build schemes have been delivered in advance of the academic intake, which is a particularly notable achievement given the 2018 summer which saw record temperatures, blue skies and the World Cup, in which England’s surprise performance left construction sites quieter than desired up and down the country.

Whilst delivering the above, we have had a number of student projects comprising over 2,000 rooms under construction in Coventry, Leeds, Lancaster, Birmingham and Sheffield heading towards completion in the summer of 2019 for clients including Vita, Crosslane, Hines and Future Generation.

These schemes are already looking fantastic and I’m sure the student intake in 2019 will be extremely pleased with their cutting edge accommodation.

Whilst we don’t have the World Cup next summer, and the British weather will probably return to normal, no doubt we will face many challenges as these projects race towards completion; however, the team at Abacus are ready and waiting having delivered in excess of 30,000 student bedrooms throughout the country. We have the knowledge and experience to steer these projects towards handover.

Our Director responsible for Student Accommodation, Mike Perry, will be attending the 11th annual Student Accommodation event organised by Property Week taking place on the 12th December 2018 at the InterContinental, London.

The Student Accommodation conference is the UK’s premier student housing event that combines an industry leading conference and evening awards, and brings together university developers, operators, investors and agents for unrivalled networking and business opportunities.

Should you wish to discuss any forthcoming student new build or refurbishment projects, please do not hesitate to contact Abacus’s Director of Residential; Mike Perry.
